Why won't my outboard start?

Most no-start calls in Palm Beach County come down to the same handful of causes. Check these in order before you call anyone.

The short answer

If an outboard won't crank, check the battery, the kill-switch lanyard, and that the shifter is in neutral. If it cranks but won't fire, the cause is almost always fuel (stale or ethanol-separated gas, a clogged filter, a closed vent or an unprimed bulb) or spark (fouled plugs or a bad connection). Salt-air corrosion on battery terminals is the single most common cause we see in South Florida.

If the engine won't crank at all

  • Kill-switch lanyard. Clip missing or seated loosely. Check it first — it takes five seconds.
  • Not in neutral. The neutral safety switch blocks cranking in gear.
  • Battery or terminals. A battery under 12.4 volts, or green corrosion on the terminals, won't turn the starter. Clean and tighten, then test under load.
  • Battery switch or fuse. A switch left off or a blown main fuse looks exactly like a dead battery.

If it cranks but won't fire

  • Fuel not reaching the engine. Squeeze the primer bulb until firm, open the tank vent, and check the fuel line for kinks.
  • Bad fuel. Ethanol gas absorbs water in Florida humidity and phase-separates in weeks. A boat that sat a month is a prime suspect.
  • Clogged filter. The water-separating fuel filter catches that water — until it's full.
  • Spark. Fouled plugs or a corroded coil connection. Pull a plug: wet and black means fuel is there but spark isn't.
